University of Minnesota Acceligen Fellowship in USA for Women Researchers from Africa 2021

The University of Minnesota in partnership with Acceligen invites applications for the Acceligen Fellowship for Women Researchers from Sub-Saharan Africa in the USA 2021.

Acceligen is dedicated to breeding better livestock for better livelihoods. It has received funding from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to develop bovine genetics optimized with traits desirable to smallholder dairy farmers.

The breeding program contributes to more sustainable production by using traits that increase farmer income and improve animal health for Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) dairy systems.

Thus, the fellowship is designed to support qualified, female graduate students from the Sub-Saharan region to obtain a research doctoral degree in 2 areas of study:

ANIMAL SCIENCE DEGREE

The candidate for Animal Science will complete a Ph.D. thesis project supporting research to develop selection schemes and/or breeding programs for dairy farmers in Sub-Saharan Africa. This will be done using Acceligen’s precision bred Gir, Holstein, and Girlando animals to improve sustainable production from their current animals or herds.

VET MED DEGREE

This candidate will complete a Ph.D. thesis project supporting research to characterize animal health phenotypes from bovine dairy animals bred by gene editing to possess traits for resistance to bovine tuberculosis and trypanosomiasis.
